Garlic Motif Noren
A handmade noren doorway curtain made from handwoven ramie fabric and dyed with natural plant dyes.
This piece features a garlic motif created using a traditional paste-resist dyeing process. A rice-based resist paste is carefully applied over the pattern before the fabric is repeatedly dipped, dyed, and dried. After the dyeing process is complete, the paste is removed by hand, revealing the soft light motif against the deep plant-dyed ground.
The fabric is handwoven ramie, with a naturally raw, breathable texture. You can see the uneven weave, slubs, and subtle irregularities in the surface — these are part of the handmade character of the textile, not flaws.
When hung in a doorway, this noren works as a soft divider between spaces. It helps slow and soften airflow while still remaining breathable. It also gently filters light and offers visual privacy without fully closing off the room.
It can be used for a doorway, bathroom door, hallway end, room entrance, closet opening, kitchen entrance, or as a decorative textile layer in the home. Its quiet texture and plant-dyed color bring a rustic, wabi-sabi, Japandi feeling to the space.
